Week 19

Happy New Year 2021: Wishes, Messages, SMS, WhatsApp Status and Images
Rover Craft Daily Challenge Day 84 - YouTube

Check-in: We were all so thrilled to see each other after almost three weeks that we logged in at 8.40 am. We talked about the things we did during the break and how difficult it was to get ready for the class today. We wished each other a Happy New Year. Ms Latha & Mr Abhimanyu came to wish us a happy new year and term.

Session 1:

Each new year begins with new commitments. So, we asked each other about the new year resolutions that we have made. All of us shared our New Year resolutions. Next, we watched Dr Long’s video that also spoke about making promises for the new year to be a better version of ourselves.

We asked students to pick one person from the class and draw them. Later, everyone had to guess who that person is. It was a fun way to begin the new term.

Session 2:

We watched the story Six Dinner Sid by Inga Moore. Based on the book, we solved a few Math & English questions by annotating on the screen.

Our learning outcome was to identify and describe, through investigation growing patterns generated by the repeated addition. We played an online quiz to diagnose how many students understand the concept of repeated addition, rows, and columns that will be our foundation for multiplication.

Session 3: SEL Lesson with Ms Latha

Ms Latha asked us to start creating a gratitude jar, in which we can keep putting strips of paper with sentences about the things that we are grateful for. We mentioned the date and expressed it with an emoji.

In the end, everyone got a chance to read their sentences.

Check-in:

I addressed students to finish their tasks on Seesaw on time. It is sad to see that some students do not complete their work for over a month also. We encouraged students to meet with us during the check-in time at 2.00 pm every day if they need help.

Session 1:

Since our learning outcome was to identify and explain the basic structure of a story— beginning, middle, and end we introduced a new app to write and summarise stories. It looked like children found it challenging to work on it and share it with teachers. We will continue again till kids become confident.

We have created a Padlet where kids can paste the link of their work, so all the children can access it.

The padlet has all the steps mentioned in it, should students want to revisit the procedure of writing and sharing stories on  https://www.mystorybook.com/

Session 2:

We revisited the six transdisciplinary themes. Later, we discussed the theme descriptor for the theme ‘Where we are in place and time’ to narrow down on what would be our focus for the next unit.

We ended the session with a fun game where one student enacted something, and other students had to guess the answer.

Session 3:

We revisited students’ previous goals and made new ones.

Before starting the work, I shared a small video about goal-setting. I shared the link to the google doc where children have to update their goals for this term. While doing this, we faced some challenges as some students cannot access their school Gmail ID. We need to solve these issues as well as finish goal setting.

Day 86: Willy!! - Beaver Creek - YouTube

Check-in:

We began our day by discussing any challenges faced by students since yesterday.

Session 1:

We had realised that kids found sharing stories on https://www.mystorybook.com challenging. So yesterday, Grade 2 teachers figured out an easy way to share stories with teachers through this website. We continued with the same learning outcome of yesterday. We divided ourselves into two small groups. One group worked with Ms Laila, and one group worked with me. We already received eight storybooks out of fifteen students. Looking forward to receiving all of them.

Session 2:

We revisited the seven PYP Key Concepts that form our essential elements to learning.

Today, our focus was the concept ‘perspective’. I showed a picture with two men who were arguing on a number. One believed it is number ‘6’, and the other believed it is number ‘9’.

We asked children to annotate who do they think is right. This was our provocation to the meaning of ‘perspective’. The meaning is the way you look at something. Followed by this, we watched a book called the Duck Rabbit by Amy Krouse Rosenthal.

It follows two narrators as they debate whether an illustration is a picture of a duck or of a rabbit. It is a picture book which makes readers of all ages eager to take a side, depending on how they look at it!

We have assigned a simple task on Flipgrid on perspective. We expect them to finish before 2.00 pm.

Check-in:

I encouraged children to volunteer for student-led sessions each Friday. Yesterday, during the afternoon check-in time, Zayden took responsibility for leading a session today. We realised that we need to be more planned for the following weeks. Then, we got busy arranging stuff for the student-led session.

Session 1:

Zayden taught us how to make a mini-notebook and a paper bag that needs no cutting and pasting.

It was interesting to learn these two things, but due to the complexities of the internet, and instructions we took more than the required time.

He shared the link with us to share with the class should they need to understand again.

Break:

Our digital break got reduced to 5 mins.

Session 2:

We introduced the three most simple strategies for doing multiplication. We connected our learning with the book Six Dinner Sid.

I showed a video on the three strategies, followed by that we solved 5 to 6 multiplication questions. Students used any of the three strategies that they found easy. By using the zoom white-board we could practice our first few sums on multiplication. We will continue this next week too.

Check-in:

I discussed with children the importance of doing all tasks on time. I congratulated them by calling out the names of students who have done their tasks in Flipgrid and Seesaw.

Session 1:

We revisited the three multiplication strategies we did on Friday and then introduced three more. Students should have a choice in selecting strategies that they like or remember. Once they are confident in these conceptual understandings, they can memorize the times’ tables.

We watched the following video:

We practiced a few questions by sharing zoom whiteboard.

Session 2:

Session 1:

We shared a task on Seesaw with kids to check their prior knowledge about Migration. I shared the screen and explained the activity to them. Students finished their work during class time and submitted them.

After the children finished their work, we read a book on changes as a follow-up activity. We have shared this book on RAZ.

10-minute break:

10 Minute Timer – 123Timer

Session 2:

We learned about temperature and how to measure temperature using a mobile phone or our laptops. To deepen their understanding, they read a book one by one in class. We have assigned this book to students on RAZ. If they find the book a little challenging, they can listen to it.

We played a skip counting game to add some fun to the class.

Finally, we have shared a Google Doc with students to keep updating the temperature chart every day.

Session 3: SEL Lesson with Ms Latha:

We spent the first few minutes in filling our gratitude jar.

Then Ms Latha introduced the vision board to us. Students had to select one coloured box and pick one statement to make a sentence with I can and I will…

The LO was to understand how to use the  ‘vision board’ strategy to develop positive thinking’ and growth-mindset.

Check-in:

It was sad to see that three students were away due to festivals. We missed them.

We started the day by reminding students to fill the temperature chart whenever it is their duty. We have shared the link in Seesaw as an announcement.

We also mentioned to children that today our country celebrates many festivals with different names like Bhogi, Lohri, Bihu, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, and Tir-moori.

We would be celebrating these festivals on Friday at 2.00 pm as a whole school.

Session 1:

I shared the map of India and asked students to mark their place of birth.

Later, I shared the map of the world and guided them to identify their birth-place.

Next, I made a few random break-out rooms.

Students had to discuss one distinctive feature of their place of birth. I suggested that they can take help from their parents, partners, or the Internet.

Lastly, they came back and shared with the whole class.

To break the monotony of sitting next to the screen, we played a game that allows movement.

I asked the children to get different objects in various colours.

We will continue this discussion by comparing and contrasting by formulating questions.

10-minute digital break:

Session 2:

We introduced the past and present tenses.

We watched a short movie, and students had to pick one character and retell the incident pretending it happened a long time ago.

We gave around 20 minutes to finish this task. We gave feedback to the three students who shared their screen and showed us the activity. We want to give a big shout out to Noorin, Zayden, and Abiram, who shared their tasks.

I am proud to see that most children have already submitted this task on Seesaw.

Session 3:

We revisited storybooks.com. The students had done the task, but still, some were facing problems. We made two groups one group worked with Ms Laila and the other with me.

We have shared the details of this task in Seesaw. Students have to write only the beginning, middle, and end of a story. If it is still challenging, they can use some other app to share it with us.

Check-in:

It was sad again to see that three students were away because of festivals. We missed them.

We reminded students to fill the temperature chart whenever it is their duty. We have shared the link in Seesaw as an announcement.

Session 1:

Since our learning outcome is to view different versions of the same story we selected the book ‘The Gruffalo’ and its movie version to compare.

We have assigned a task on Seesaw, which has links to the book-read aloud and the movie. Students have to watch the movie whenever they have 30 minutes to spare. Followed by that, they have to make comparisons. We shared a lot of brainstorming questions to keep in mind while comparing the two versions. We will continue this task again. Students can submit this task by Sunday.

We revisited past tense by playing a game on Baamboozle.

10-minute digital break:

Session 2:

We made three breakout rooms with Zayden, Kian, and Noorin.

KIAN Group
NOORIN Group
ZAYDEN Group

These are three people in our class who have migrated from some other part of the world/country to Hyderabad. The other group members were to carry out a mock interview and ask questions related to migration.

I gave a set of sample questions which they could use to take the interview.

Once the interview was over, the students came back to the main session. One member from each group shared their experience of the interview.

We watched a short video on migration to deepen our understanding of migration.

As a plenary, we asked all students to compose one question (in the chatbox) they would ask the guest who is coming to meet us next week. It was heartening to see that children could frame thick questions.

Please find the chat.

Tomorrow we have Faiz leading a student-led class.

Race Car Number - 91 - Details | harrisdecals.com

Session 1:

We wanted to inquire into how different life circumstances affect people’s lives, so we watched a book, The Journey- written by Francesca Sanna. It is a story of a family who sets out on a journey filled with fear of the unknown but with great hope as well. They migrate to another country because of war.

Next, students selected their break-out rooms.

They discussed with their peers one significant event which led to a twist or a change. It could be a new school, new teacher, new house, a sibling, a pet, moving away from someone, or the lockdown!

When they returned to the main session, two students shared an event.

As a plenary, students wrote 3-4 lines about the event that has brought a change in their life.

As a follow-up activity, students have to identify one person and interview them. They can do this at the weekend.

10-minute break:

The New Meaning Of Taking A Break - BW people

Session 2:

Faiz led a session to teach a few science experiments dealing with chemical reactions.

Ms Laila made real-life connections with chemical reactions and explained the reactions that occur in our bodies with the kinds of food we eat.

The students were so inspired they want to do more of such experiments at home. So, I have shared a link in the Seesaw announcement for them.
